Be Ready When It Matters: Why CPR Training Should Be Part of Your Fall Safety Plan
October brings cooler weather, football games, fall festivals, school events, Halloween activities, church gatherings, and more time spent enjoying our communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
While we're making plans for all the things that make fall enjoyable, October is also a good time to ask a simple question:
If someone suddenly needed help, would you know what to do?
Emergencies don't make appointments. They can happen at work, at home, at a child's sporting event, at church, in a restaurant, or during a community gathering.
At First Assist CPR, our goal is to help individuals and organizations develop the skills and confidence to respond when those unexpected moments occur.
CPR Isn't Just a Workplace Requirement
For many people, the first time they think seriously about CPR training is when an employer tells them they need certification.
Healthcare professionals, childcare workers, caregivers, and employees in many other fields may need CPR training as part of their jobs.
But CPR is much more than another box to check for work.
Think about the people you're around every day.
Your spouse.
Your children.
Your parents.
Your coworkers.
Your friends.
Your neighbors.
Learning CPR means developing skills that could potentially be needed anywhere—not only while you're on the clock.
Fall Brings More Opportunities to Gather
October is filled with activities throughout Mississippi.
Families attend football games and sporting events. Churches host fall festivals. Schools hold activities. Children go trick-or-treating. Families gather for Halloween parties, and community organizations host outdoor events.
When more people gather, having individuals who know how to respond to an emergency is valuable.
If you're responsible for a school, church, sports organization, childcare center, fitness facility, or community event, October is an excellent time to evaluate your emergency preparedness.
Ask your team:
Who here is currently CPR trained?
Where is our AED?
Would employees or volunteers know where to find it?
Do we have trained people available during every shift or event?
When do our current certifications expire?
If you're unsure of the answers, that's a good reason to start the conversation.
What Does CPR/AED Training Teach?
Quality CPR training goes beyond watching someone demonstrate chest compressions.
Hands-on training gives participants an opportunity to practice important skills and become more familiar with what they may be asked to do during an emergency.
Depending on the appropriate course, training may cover topics such as recognizing cardiac arrest, activating the emergency response system, performing CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
An emergency is not the ideal time to see an AED for the first time.
Training allows you to become familiar with the equipment and procedures in a controlled environment.
Don't Forget About New Employees
October is also a good time for Mississippi businesses to review employee training records.
Have you hired anyone recently?
Do you have employees approaching their certification renewal dates?
Does one department have trained personnel while another doesn't?
Businesses often schedule one CPR class and then don't think about training again until certifications begin expiring.
A better approach is to make CPR training part of your organization's ongoing safety planning.
At First Assist CPR, we offer options for individuals as well as group and on-site training, making it easier for organizations to keep their teams prepared.
